NGO launches lai see envelopes recycling

Hong Kong | Feb 12, 2019 18:37
The environmental group Greeners Action will collect used lai see packets over the next two weeks, as it highlights wasteful practices during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Government figures suggest that the New Year flower markets alone are responsible for almost 260 tons of extra rubbish in landfills.
Greeners Action estimates that about 320 million red packets are handed out each year.
The group's executive director, Angus Ho, told RTHK's Richard Pyne that recycling lai see packets is an easy fix, and people can participate at 460 locations around the city.
"I think it will be nearby the household or the estates they can find a collection box. They can put red packets in good shape inside the box so that we can repackage, sort out and redistribute them to the community next year,” he said.
