School text book prices exceed inflation

Hong Kong | Jul 17, 2017 18:19
The Consumer Council said today that schools in Hong Kong should consider reducing their reliance on textbooks as the latest price rises outstrip inflation.
The watchdog said out of 540 primary and secondary school textbooks on the market, all but 11 are now more expensive last year, with an average price increase of 3.2 percent.
The council's spokesman, Professor Michael Hui, said schools should adopt alternative teaching materials to lessen the burden on parents.
"Textbooks are of course one important type of material, tool they can use in teaching and learning. But then, of course, I think in modern teaching there are a lot of other tools and materials you can make use of.” -RTHK
