China's No 1 fugitive, Yang Xiuzhu, who once sought asylum in the United States, was sentenced to eight years in jail today for embezzlement and taking bribes by a court in east China, Xinhua reports.
Yang, the former vice mayor of Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, was No 1 on the list of top 100 Chinese fugitives in an Interpol "red notice" in 2015.
Yang was on the run for 13 years before being hauled back to China last year. She was flown back from the United States in November. Earlier, she has sought asylum in France and the Netherlands.
She had been accused of taking 250 million yuan in bribes as a city official.
