Reality check for Handover Cup

Central Station | Mar 21, 2017
A "Handover Cup" to celebrate the SAR's 20th birthday won't be held after all as Spanish La Liga giant Real Madrid declined to travel here to participate, Hong Kong Football Association chairman Brian Leung Hung-tak confirmed yesterday.

Meanwhile, there isn't enough time to invite another team, Leung said.

Leung said the Spanish giants don't want to travel so far to Hong Kong after the International Champions Cup held in North America in August.

Real Madrid, which won the UEFA Champions League title last reason for a record 11th time, is one of the most popular football clubs in the world.

The club boasts world-class players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos, while their head coach is legendary French player Zinedine Zidane.

But Hong Kong football fans needn't fret, as it's almost certain that Liverpool will come to play in the Premier League Asia Trophy this summer.

Premier League champions Leicester City are likely to join too, while a third English club is to be confirmed.
