Airport busier with people, cargo

A 1.3-percent, year-on-year increase to 35.7 million passengers was recorded at Hong Kong International Airport in the first half.

The modest rise was driven largely by the continued growth of outbound travel by locals, according to the Airport Authority. That is seen to be around 3 percent up on an annual basis, with the most significant increase involving holidays to Japan.

Passenger traffic rose 0.5 percent to 5.9 million and flight movements increased 2.4 percent to 34,590 in June.

There was a significant growth in cargo throughput was recorded in the first half, with 2.3 million tonnes of cargo handled. That was up 11.3 percent over the corresponding period last year.

In June, cargo throughput was 410,000 tonnes, representing year-on- year growth of 11.4 percent.

On that, the authority said the increase came with higher exports brought about by an improvement in global trade.

"Flight services at HKIA also continue to expand," said Henry Ma Yiu- man, a senior manager with the authority.

"Recently, two new airlines began operating at HKIA. Virgin Australia started operating five return flights a week between Hong Kong and Melbourne in July while Air Japan commenced the operation of daily flights to Tokyo's Narita International Airport in June."

And Hong Kong Airlines expanded services to include daily direct flights to Vancouver in June, Ma added.
