Southgate ponders captaincy change for Brazil matchSports | Nov 14, 2017
Southgate has been happy to rotate the leadership, with Eric Dier becoming the sixth England captain of his tenure during the goalless draw with Germany. Ahead of his side's final match of 2017, Southgate is considering handing the armband to someone else.
"The key was to build a group of people who are happy leading and can take more responsibility," Southgate said.
"Eric is another one who has great maturity and tactical understanding of the game and can show a bit more authority at times and have a bigger impact on others."
Striker Jamie Vardy, meanwhile, leaped to the defense of Danny Drinkwater after his former clubmate rejected the chance of an England call- up.
"He definitely wants to play for his country but he has been struggling to get a bit of match-time," Vardy said. "He was injured and he needs to get the match sharpness back ... He definitely has a chance of getting into the squad when he is fit."
Drinkwater, 27, was accused of letting down Southgate when he pulled out of the squad for two friendlies. The Chelsea midfielder said he did not feel fully fit after struggling to recover from a calf problem.
