Mourinho confident as United secure last-16 place in style

Sports | Dec 7, 2017
Manchester United and Juventus both clinched a place in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Bayern Munich gained a measure of revenge over Paris Saint-Germain.

Roma and Basel also went through with victories in their final group games, but Atletico Madrid, beaten finalists in 2014 and 2016, were eliminated.

United came from behind to beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 at Old Trafford as they reached the knockout rounds for the first time since 2013-14. Only a heavy defeat could have eliminated United in Group A, but Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford scored two minutes apart in the second half to seal victory.

"I'm really happy because we don't want to qualify with a defeat. We don't want to qualify with a bad performance," United manager Jose Mourinho said.

Bayern, Juventus and holders Real Madrid are among the teams United could now face in the first knockout stage. "It doesn't matter which team we get in the draw," Mourinho said. "I think that team won't be jumping with happiness to play against us."

Last season's beaten finalists Juventus progressed from Group D thanks to their 2-0 win at Olympiakos. The Italian champions go through behind Barcelona, who rounded off their group phase by easing to a 2-0 win at home against Sporting Lisbon.

Roma advanced as Group C winners with a 1-0 victory at home to Qarabag of Azerbaijan. That turned out to be enough for the Italians to win the group ahead of Chelsea, who had to come from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Atletico.

PSG advanced as the top team from Group B despite losing 3-1 to Bayern in Germany. Having lost 3-0 in Paris in September, Bayern needed to win by four goals to leapfrog PSG.
