Animals have been poached in increasing numbers over recent years from a game park at Hoedspruit in Limpopo province, and "it seems the victim was poaching when he was attacked and killed by lions," police officer Moatshe Ngoepe said. "They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains."
A loaded hunting rifle was found near the body, and police are trying to establish the victim's identity.
Lions were found poisoned last year near a farm in the same province with their heads and paws sawn off. Investigators have noted lion body parts are used in traditional medicine.
