A 23-year-old Chinese student in the Philippines could face jail or deportation after assault charges were filed against her, alleging she threw a cup of soy pudding at a policeman inside a train station.
Jiale Zhang, a freshman Bachelor of Fashion student at the School of Fashion and Arts Design Institute in Makati, faces the risk of imprisonment ranging from four months to four years if convicted on the direct assault charge.
The incident reportedly occurred after she was prevented from entering the platform area carrying an unconsumed beverage.
Aside from the criminal complaints, Metro Manila police are asking the Bureau of Immigration to have the woman deported.
Zhang was arrested over the weekend and accused of throwing a tantrum and her unfinished drink at officer William Cristobal, after he stopped her to explain the "liquids ban" at Metro Manila train stations.
Cristobal filed complaints for direct assault, disobedience to an agent of a person in authority, and unjust vexation against Zhang at the Mandaluyong City Prosecutor's Office.
The woman was detained at the local police station until her lawyer arrived.
The incident, which has gone viral, drew calls for her deportation, as netizens fumed at the disrespectful act against the officer.
Train stations in Metro Manila stepped up security measures after a bomb threat was received last month, banning liquids on platforms.
