Nudge, nudge in Nobel for Trump

Central Station | Feb 18, 2019
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after receiving a request from the US government to do so, the Asahi newspaper claims.

That followed the US president's saying Abe nominated him for the prize for opening talks and easing tensions with North Korea. Abe gave him "the most beautiful copy" of a five-page nomination letter, Trump had said on Friday.

The US government had sounded out Abe over the Noble Peace Prize nomination after Trump's summit in June with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - the first meeting between a North Korean leader and a sitting US president, said Asahi, citing a Japanese government source.

A foreign ministry spokesman in Tokyo said officials were aware of Trump's remarks but "would refrain from commenting on the interaction between the two leaders." Under Nobel rules, names and other information about unsuccessful nominations cannot be disclosed for 50 years.
