Praise for star who 'heralded golden age'

Sports | Apr 25, 2019
Mainland teams and media heaped praise on Dario Conca, who put Chinese football on the map with a record-breaking move in 2011, paving the way for the arrivals of Didier Drogba, Oscar and Hulk.

The Argentine midfielder, who retired just two weeks before his 36th birthday, was hailed as a pioneer who helped change the game since Guangzhou Evergrande forked out a then-domestic-record US$10 million (HK$78 million) to buy Conca from Brazil's Fluminense in July 2011. But it was his wages which stunned the world, his reported annual salary of US$12.5 million putting him behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the time.

"It heralded a golden age," said Sina Sports. "He was one of the totems of the Chinese Super League."
