President Rodrigo Duterte crooned a hit Filipino love song at a dinner in Manila for leaders from across Asia and elsewhere, claiming he'd done so as that was what Donald Trump wanted.

The US and Philippine presidents were among 19 leaders at a gala in the Philippines capital ahead of the annual ASEAN summit, and at one point Duterte took the microphone to sing Ikaw ("You") in a duet with Filipina diva Pilita Corrales. One of the song's verses translates as "You are the light in my world, a half of this heart of mine."

The 72-year-old Duterte, who has boasted of having mistresses though now appearing to be down to one after separating from his wife, declared later: "Ladies and gentlemen, I sang uninvited upon the orders of the commander-in- chief of the United States."
